Laboratory Schedule Type

Learning Objectives: Lab Coordinator: Geri Mayer Phone: 297-2405 SC 142 e-mail: gmayer@fau.edu TA: Jett van Note; Phone: (561) 419-1967; Office Info: SC 295 Tu/Th 12 – 1; email: Jett.VanNote@mpfi.org Prerequisite: none Corequisite: BSC 2086 Lecture Credits = 1 In this class you will become familiar with the various systems of the human body (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urogenital, reproductive and endocrine) through the use of dissection materials including the sheep’s heart, ovaries, and testicles and the cat. The focus of the lab is primarily anatomy with emphasis on structure and function, leaving the majority of the physiology component to the lecture, with the exception of cardiovascular and renal physiology. This lab is interesting and it is fun! Please familiarize yourself with the rules. At the end of the course, you will be able to identify various structures and their physiological functions on the models and preserved specimens and relate them to human anatomy and physiology
Required Materials: REQUIRED MATERIALS: Each student is required to purchase the text, Human Anatomy and Physiology, by Martini, the lab manual, Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, Marieb’s 11th edition, a dissection kit, and gloves. All of the materials must be brought to every lab. Your participation grade depends on this. We are also using PAR this semester, an online platform for quizzes and extra credit available for purchase only at the FAU bookstore, designed to provide you with readiness for the practical exams. These will be weekly quizzes online with ample extra credit opportunities to provide practical exam-like questions that will hopefully give your grade a boost. SAFETY: Safety in the lab is very important. No eating or drinking will be permitted in the laboratory. Shoes must be worn at all times (no roller blades, etc). Your TA will review our clean laboratory policy. Your bench must be cleaned and wiped down after each class. Dissection trays must be washed and rinsed. Report all breakages to the instructor immediately. You may want to bring safety goggles and lab coats for dissection. ATTENDANCE & MAKE-UP POLICY: Two unexcused absences will cause you to fail this course. Attendance is required and mandatory. The credit issued for this course is primarily for hands-on experience. You will be allowed one excused absence only. If you must miss a lab ONCE, you must have written verifiable documentation, and you may attend one of the other lab sections. This is the only way to make up a quiz within the same week of a missed lab. An unexcused absence will result in participation points being deducted from your grade for that lab. If you miss two labs without an excuse, you will automatically fail the course if you are not maintaining a passing grade. If you are maintaining a passing grade, you may withdraw with an “I” and make up those labs during a subsequent course, in order to receive credit. YOU MUST TAKE PRACTICAL EXAMS IN YOUR OWN SECTION !! NO MAKE UP PRACTICALS! Religious Accommodations: Students who wish to be excused from course work, class activities or examinations must notify the instructor in advance of their intention to participate in religious observation and request an excused absence. PARTICIPATION: Participation and enthusiasm for this course will significantly increase the value of what you learn. You will receive a total of 35 participation points. Up to 5 points per lab can be deducted for lack of participation, punctuality problems, leaving early, or not being prepared for class. This could impact your final grade. GRADING POLICY: Three lab quizzes will be given on designated days, worth 35 points each. Your lowest score will be dropped. Two practical exams will be given, worth 125 points each. One practical quiz is worth 50 points. PPP factor for participation is worth 35 points. PPP 35 Quizzes 35 x 3= 105 minus lowest score = 70 Practical Quiz 50 pts. (no drop) Practicals 250 PAR 100 (plus 60 extra credit) your grade will be determined by adding your total points and dividing by 500 (the actual number of points is 505) and the following scale: Total Points Percentage Grade 463-500 93-100 A 447-462 90-92 A- 432-446 87-89 B+ 412-431 83-86 B 397-411 80-82 B- 382-396 77-79 C+ 362-381 73-76 C 347-361 70-72 C- 332-346 67-69 D+ 312-331 63-66 D 297-311 60-62 D- 000-296 00-59 F Lab Dates Topic Chapter Activities 1 6/25 Microscope slides (heart, circulatory, lymphatic , blood cells) chap 29 2 6/30 Heart 30 dissection 3 7/1-7/2 Circulatory, Lymphatic 32,35 dissection, Quiz 1 (35 pts) 4 7/6-7/7 Respiratory 36 dissection, Practical Quiz 2 (50 pts) 5 7/8-7/9 Practical Exam (125 pts) 6 7/13-7/14 Digestive 38 dissection, slides 7 7/15-7/16 Urogenital 40 dissection, Quiz 3 (35 pts) 8 7/20-7/21 Reproductive 42,43 dissection, Quiz 4 (35 pts) 9 7/22-7/23 Endocrine 27 10 7/27-7/28 Final Practical Exam (125 pts) Disability Policy Statement: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) students who require reasonable accommodations due to a disability to properly execute coursework must register with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD)—SU 133.
